Cupressus torulosa is a large, erect, rather close-foliaged, frost-resistant tree, usually attaining a height of about 15-25mt. and 37 ft in girth with a clear bole of 60-80ft have been observed. Leaves are scale-like, closely pressed along the shoots, blunt, dark green. The tree grows wildly in Nepal between altitudes of 5000-9000 ft (1800-3300mt.). Seed cones are elliptical in shape and measure about 10-20 mm in diameter. Flowering occurs in February-March.The cones are green when young and turn red-dark brown on maturity to release 6-8 Cupressus torulosa seeds per scale. Cupressus torulosa is extremely adaptable to varying climate in the Himalayan region. The tree grows in different forms of patches in combination with deodar, spruce, silver fir, blue pine or oak. It is found wild on the slopes of china hill at Naini Tal, the limestone cliffs of Moila and Lokandi in Jaunsar, Shimla hills, Chamba, Kullu, Garhwal and other parts of western Himalayas. This plant is estimated as a ‘least concerned variety’ in IUCN red list.
