General Description: Cytisus scoparius, the Common Broom and Scotch Broom, syn. Sarothamnus scoparius, is a perennial leguminous shrub native to western and central Europe. The plant attains a height 2.4mt. In Britain and Ireland the standard name is Broom, but this name is also used generically for other related species (see broom), and the term Common Broom is sometimes used for clarification. In other English-speaking countries, the most prevalent common name is Scotch Broom (or Scot's Broom); English Broom is also occasionally used. Leaves are alternately arranged, small, trifoliate, upper leaves often with only 1leaflet; colour is medium to bright green. Stems are flexible, green when young and grey when old. Flowering occurs in May to early June. Propagation is done by cuttings and seeds.
